Secure and standards-based edge experience with ASTRID 3.5" SBC

With the ASTRID 3.5" SBC, based on NXP i.MX 8M Mini microprocessors, SECO joins the Arm Project Cassini, whose goal is to create a secure Arm Edge ecosystem that guarantees interoperability.

Overview & Goal

The development of AI, 5G and the Internet of Things is driving the Fifth Wave of Computing. Through IoT technology, devices are able to process data directly in the field, enabling greater efficiency without the need to transmit large amounts of data over long distances. However, on-device processing raises the problem of interoperability: The more IoT endpoints there are, the greater the risk that the diversity of devices will hinder compatibility. By joining the Cassini project, SECO shares Arm's goal of creating a secure Arm Edge ecosystem where interoperability is ensured through a more unified hardware system architecture and consistency in key processes such as booting through a standards-based approach.

Challenge

The growing IoT is leading to an increase in the ability to process data in edge servers or end devices. Bandwidth, power consumption, latency and security are reasons why workloads migrate close to the data source. However, there are also drawbacks: The increase in edge endpoints also means an increase in device diversity, which can hinder interoperability, especially at the application level. In a situation where fragmentation could hinder the value of IoT, the transition from massively distributed, heterogeneous data processing to centralised, homogeneous data processing is crucial: the more diverse the endpoints, the lower the performance; the more integrated the endpoints, the greater the data processing. Project Cassini aims to take the success of Arm's cloud-native ecosystem to the edge and ensure that software works seamlessly across a diverse ecosystem of hardware.

Solution & Benifit

SECO has joined the Project Cassini initiative with the ASTRID 3.5" SBC, which is based on NXP i.MX 8M Mini microprocessors and has received SystemReady IR certification. This SBC is specifically designed for IoT edge devices built with SoCs on Arm A-Profile architecture, ensuring that interoperability with embedded Linux and other embedded OS is maintained. This means that SECO's ASTRID provides a set of hardware and firmware functions that a non-proprietary OS can rely on to implement the OS image. It can then be used by a broad software ecosystem and seamlessly integrated into larger networks for use by partners in many different markets. With SystemReady IR certification, ASTRID SBC complies with a number of edge platform development standards and enables easy deployment of cloud-based software and applications on-premise. For the customer, choosing this platform means working in an ecosystem that has a security foundation that meets key standards.
